Abstract

Tributary swamps were identified in northern Akwa Ibon State in which agricultural development was serious constrained by imperfect drainage and high flood water level in them. Drainage design used 5 years rainfall return period with the rainfall duration frequency computed for N-consecutive-day rainfall using Gumbel Extreme Value (GEV) plotted on Gringerton position. The case of Mbiabet subcatchment swamp was designed for by sub-dividing it into 10 smaller subcatchments areas to be drained and using rational formula to computerize computed together with the excavation costs of such volumes. The project had a low financial rate of return that would be improved by good water management.
