OPTIMAL POWER FLOW ANALYSIS OF NIGERIAN POWER NETWORK INCLUDING FACTS DEVICES

This paper presents results of Optimal Power Flow (OPF) analysis of the Nigerian 330-kV power system network, with Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) devices included. The Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) and Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) data were simultaneously incorporated into an existing Newton-based OPF algorithm. The algorithm was applied to solve the Nigerian 34-bus power system. The hydro units were assumed to have been optimally dispatched while the OPF was used to dispatch the thermal plants. The OPF results without FACTS devices showed that the power network operated at a cheaper generation cost of 3.268,518.644₦/h when compared with the generation cost for the conventional power flow at 3,459,837.464₦/h. The results also showed that the incorporation of STATCOM and UPFC improved the overall system performance when compared with the solution with either of these devices on the network.
