LABORATORY TRIAL OF SOIL STABILIZATION USING PULVERIZED COAL BOTTOM ASH

A low calcium pulverized coal bottom ash (PCВА) is evaluated for use as a stabilizer for a residual lateritic soil. The laboratory study consisted of the following tests conducted on soil PCBA mixtures compacted at the energy level of the standard Proctor: moisture - density relationship, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR) and durability by immersion in water. Moderate increases in strength and durability were recorded on treating the lateritic soil with an optimum 6% PCBA content. Testing methods and recommendations for mix design of PCBA stabilized pavement subgrade are presented and the mechanism of PCBA cementation is discussed.
