STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING INTRA URBAN MASS TRANSIT OPERATION IN NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF KWARA STATE

Abstract

This paper examines the nature and conditions of the existing road network systems in Kwara State. It also discusses the public transportation needs and operating agencies. It highlights the nature and causes of the transport problems.

Four factors namely the poor conditions of the roads, the vehicles, the Drivers/Mechanics and the Economy have been seen as factors responsible for the problems. These factors are discussed with reference to their magnitude, trends and severity. Solutions considered as appropriate to reduce the negative influence of these factors are proposed as strategies for improved performance. It is concluded that adopting these solutions would result to improvement in the level of safety, quality of vehicles, haulage capacity, level of pollution, economy of operation and commuter satisfaction.
