POTENTIAL NIGERIAN SEED OILS FOR ALKYDS PRODUCTION: A REVIEW
Keywords:
Alkyds, Resins, Paints, Non-conventional vegetable oil, NigeriaAbstract
Alkyds have been considered as vital raw materials useful for production of surface coatings in the paints industry. Currently, in the Nigerian paints industries, alkyds are obtained mainly by importation since the traditional vegetable oils for making alkyds are not really available. The influence of oil type is significant in the composition of alkyds and the alkyd resin properties. This work attempts to review some reports on locally available seed oils and their properties for application in alkyd resin production. The opportunities and challenges of adopting these indigenous seed oils for alkyd resin manufacture in Nigeria were summarized. More research towards the commercial production of indigenous seed oil and its adoption in the alkyds production will have a positive effect on the promotion of foreign exchange conservation.
