Abstract

This study focuses on the behaviour of aluminium alloy hydrochloric acid environment where calcium nitrite and sodium chromate are used as inhibitors. Having set up a control experiment of 0.1M HCl, similar acid solution Was prepared with various concentrations of the inhibitors. Using a weight loss method, the corrosion of 6063.Al alloy samples was measured and the corrosion rates at different concentrations of inhibitors were determined. Performance of each of the inhibitors was assessed and the results obtained compared. It was observed that with increasing inhibitor concentration, efficiency increases. It was also noted that when the concentration of the inhibitors was in excess of 50g/dm³, the efficiency of sodium chromate is about 4 to 4.5 times more than that of calcium nitrite.
