PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF SOME VEGETABLE OILS AS CORROSION INHIBITORS OF STEEL REINFORCED CONCRETE IN SOME ENVIRONMENTS
Abstract
An experimental study on the performance of some vegetable oils (ground nut oil, soy beans oil, and cotton seed oil) as corrosion inhibitors on mild steel rebars buried in concrete admixed with the inhibitors and exposed selected aggressive environments is reported. The Corrosion rate of the steel bars was evaluated using the linear polarization resistance and weight loss techniques. The results of the potential shift obtained indicate that all the organic inhibitors are effective in retarding reinforcement corrosion in the aggressive environment chosen. The efficiency of inhibition increased with increase in concentration of the inhibitors due to the hydrophobic property of the inhibitors chosen.
