Road Traffic Accident Appraisal For Bauchi Environ
Abstract
Making road traffic system less hazardous requires the understanding of the system as a whole. This paper provides an analysis of road safety statistics for Bauchi environ. Accident data were complied from Federal Road Safety Corps Bauchi's daily accident register. These data were analyzed using MS EXCEL. Fatal accidents were found to constitute 20% to 26% in the area. The serious accident cases were found to range from 42% to 55%, 15% to 26% of all persons involved in road traffic accidents in Bauchi environ dies. The three major causes of road traffic accident in Bauchi Environ in their ranked order for the period 2002 to 2004 are dangerous driving 39% to 49%, speed variation 21% to 28% and tyre burst 9% to 21%. Human factors constituted 71% to 85% of the yearly causes of accident while vehicular factors accounted for 11% to 23% and Environmental factors were found to be 4% to 5% yearly.
